The Carbon Trust Standard is an independent certification scheme from The Carbon Trust founded in 2001, certifying an organisation’s impact in respect of:
- Energy usage and greenhouse gas (CO2e) emissions
- Water usage, management and effluent
- Waste management and disposal.
Its stated aim is to recognise best practice and real achievements in reduction, to help organisations to measure, manage and reduce their environmental impact, whilst improving their resource management and operational sustainability. The certification process aims to identify inefficiencies in resource use and to provide a framework for improving management processes, reducing waste and costs.
They offer the following certification based on their clients needs:
- Carbon Trust Standard for Carbon
- Carbon Trust Standard for Water
- Carbon Trust Standard for Waste
- Carbon Footprint from the Carbon Trust
- Carbon Trust Standard for Supply Chain
- Carbon Trust product water Footprint
Once an organisation has received a Carbon Trust Product Footprint Certification, the Footprint Label can be used to publicly brand footprinted products to communicate their sustainability credentials.
They have clients in the electronics, education and food and beverage industries, and focus more on established organisation in order to help them measure, manage and reduce their environmental impact.

Thank you Abi! I'd love to understand better how a company or organization can actually get certified through this process. If you can explain this in class tomorrow, that would be extremely helpful.
